An Expert Assessment of Social Media Marketing

social-media-waste-of-timeWe talk a lot about social media marketing. A lot. In the past few weeks alone we’ve published posts on using Twitter to help build a brand, advantages and disadvantages of being a YouTube partner, and statistics on how much MORE money we’ll spend on social network marketing this year.

What can we say  – we’ve got a soft spot for social media and its marketing potential.

Of course, we think we’re justified in our love of applying new technologies to tried-and-true techniques. After all, we have implemented some of these components in our own campaigns, and they seem, for the most part, to garner a positive response.

As always – and we preach this more than we prosthelytize social media as the second coming – serious consideration should be given to the benefits and pitfalls of social media before abandoning everything else you know. Even then, while you weigh your options, your question shouldn’t be ‘Should I engage in social media marketing?’ but rather ‘HOW should I engage in social media marketing?’

But you don’t have to take our word for it.

Maybe you’re the kind of person who needs to hear these things from IBM Vice President Sandy Carter, who did an interview on the subject with MarketingProfs.com.

During the chat, Sandy offers her professional perspective on the importance of social media for business, as well as some of the topics she’ll cover during a session at the B2B Forum in Boston on June 8 & 9 – a conference we highly recommend you attend if these sort of topics are your cup of tea.

Standing Up For What You Believe In

Many Americans were surprised that pastor Rick Warren was going to deliver president Obama’s invocation on Inauguration Day, January 20th, 2009. When Senior Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum of CBST (Congregation Beth Simchat Torah, New York City’s Synagogue for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Jews) came to us with the idea of having an alternative invocation video, the only way to get her message out there fast enough was to develop a compelling viral campaign.

Our viral campaign featured Kleinbaum’s video and was very successful over a short period of time; the video was viewed favorably by thousands of people, was featured on various websites, and was watched by many on January 20th at the exact time Warren was delivering his invocation.

Online Video Advertising Killed the Television Commercial Star

Hear that sound?

It’s eMarketer trumpeting the future of online video advertising in two new reports issued in as many days.

In another projection, eMarketer suggests that 183.3 million Internet users will view online video ads five years from now, up from 129.5 million viewers this year.

Can’t Run With the Big Blogs? That’s OK – There’s Still Room on the Porch

Directing traffic to your blog is like trying to unload tix to an Avril Lavigne concert when the New Kids are performing next door. It’s a formidable task – but it can be done.

Considering, though, that 175,000 new blogs a day are added to the estimated 213 million (and counting) existing English-language blogs already floating around the ’sphere, how do you make your property valuable enough to pique interest and gain a following? Here, a few tips on how to get the most out of your slice of cyber space while retaining more dignity than an angst-rattled pop star.

News Wrap-Up: Online Media Partnerships, Quarter Reports, and How Much People Love the iPhone

This July, we’re seeing several different web-related trends. First, one of the few things that’s hotter than the weather is the iPhone, and by association, mobile web.

Second, at the end of the quarter, some large online/tech companies suffer from disappointing financial reports while others continue flourishing.

And lastly, many of these media giants are attempting to forge relationships with one another. But as we will report, these partnerships are a lot like romantic relationships: full of coyness, complications, and give-and-take principles.
