The Good & Bad of the 'Twitter Effect'

bruno-movie-01Way back in April, we published a post titled “Is Tweeting for the Birds?” That was when Twitter was just becoming the phenomenon it is now – thanks to lots of press from celebrity endorsers.

Our open-ended question to you then – despite the star-studded brouhaha over the brand – was if you thought Twitter would become a relevant and reliable tool for marketing businesses on the Internet.

It seems – and our apologies to the naysayers – that the answer is yes.

Several months have passed since Ashton Kutcher and CNN famously duked it out for the most Twitter followers (Ashton won) – and the celebrity endorsements have consistently subsided (and, in fact, some of those same celebrities who sang Twitter’s praises have threatened to turn on the microblogging service if it went through with a rumored Twitter-based TV program).

Is 'Tweeting' for the Birds?

twitter-imageWith all the buzz surrounding Twitter these days – namely the showdown between Ashton Kutcher and CNN – it’s hard not to think about how this new microblogging craze can impact your business.

But, like MySpace, Facebook and other social networking platforms before it, there’s a general feeling of caution for companies contemplating whether or not it’s in their best interest. Not limited to its gallery of forward-thinking Web practices, the site is also a forum for online conversation about the future of Internet design. Continue reading ‘Pop, Pop, PhizzPop’

How to Protect Your Business from Copyright Infringement

Poor Steve Jobs. The ardent Beatles fan must have been a little tormented by his company’s decades-long trademark battle with Apple Corps, the rock band’s holding company.

The dispute and its many particulars were finally settled as late as 2007, with Apple Inc. taking away all ownership rights and then licensing some of them back to Apple Corps.

No one wants to be the subject of a lawsuit, and having your branding and marketing concepts stolen by a competitor is also undesirable. How do you protect yourself from copyright infringement?

Stop Poking Me: Spamming on Networking Sites

Sometimes, so-called “controversies” are overblown by the media. The topic of online privacy on social networks, however, is not one of those cases.

Here’s a personal vignette to share: just this week, I found a friend request from someone I have already friended. It was a curious thing, and then I scrolled down to see that the friend in question posted a warning on his status update feature: “My name and photo have been hijacked to create a FAKE second profile. Please disregard any friend requests from this fake second profile. The REAL profile has this cat icon.” Continue reading ‘Stop Poking Me: Spamming on Networking Sites’
