The Good & Bad of the 'Twitter Effect'

bruno-movie-01Way back in April, we published a post titled “Is Tweeting for the Birds?” That was when Twitter was just becoming the phenomenon it is now – thanks to lots of press from celebrity endorsers.

Our open-ended question to you then – despite the star-studded brouhaha over the brand – was if you thought Twitter would become a relevant and reliable tool for marketing businesses on the Internet.

It seems – and our apologies to the naysayers – that the answer is yes.

Several months have passed since Ashton Kutcher and CNN famously duked it out for the most Twitter followers (Ashton won) – and the celebrity endorsements have consistently subsided (and, in fact, some of those same celebrities who sang Twitter’s praises have threatened to turn on the microblogging service if it went through with a rumored Twitter-based TV program).

Is 'Tweeting' for the Birds?

twitter-imageWith all the buzz surrounding Twitter these days – namely the showdown between Ashton Kutcher and CNN – it’s hard not to think about how this new microblogging craze can impact your business.

But, like MySpace, Facebook and other social networking platforms before it, there’s a general feeling of caution for companies contemplating whether or not it’s in their best interest. And rightly so. Handled properly and with care, Twitter can do your organization a world of good. Used irresponsibly – well, there’s no telling how much damage you could do.

Still, if you’re on the fence about opening the Twitter gates, we suggest reading this article on ChiefMarketer.com. CNN Can't Hold Candle to PerezHilton.com

We know we’ve been a little heavy on the blog-themed posts lately, but we embrace the irony of blogging about blogging. Or something like that. We’re confused, too.

In any case, we recently discovered this ranking of the Top 10 Visited U.S. Blog and Personal Websites, and were taken aback by what and who appeared.

The top three aren’t so surprising. MySpace has the most daily users of any single social networking site – even if Facebook is steadily closing in on its lead. And Blogger and LiveJournal, well, collectively they have a user base in the tens of millions.

Can’t Run With the Big Blogs? That’s OK – There’s Still Room on the Porch

Directing traffic to your blog is like trying to unload tix to an Avril Lavigne concert when the New Kids are performing next door. It’s a formidable task – but it can be done.

Considering, though, that 175,000 new blogs a day are added to the estimated 213 million (and counting) existing English-language blogs already floating around the ’sphere, how do you make your property valuable enough to pique interest and gain a following? Here, a few tips on how to get the most out of your slice of cyber space while retaining more dignity than an angst-rattled pop star.

BlahGirls.com: ‘South Park’ Meets Perez Hilton

Reviews are in for entertainer-turned-Silicon Valley figurehead Ashton Kutcher’s latest pet project, BlahGirls.com, the new social-networking site targeting teen girls.

David Hauslaib’s Jossip said, “Further proving the theory that most people successful in traditional media are like monkeys faced with calculus when it comes to the Internet, Ashton Kutcher, actor and reality show producer, and his production company, Katalyst Media, give us Blah Girls.”

On the other hand, according to NewTeeVee writer Liz Gannes, influential investor Ron Conway – who’s famous for helping fund the startup stages of Google, Ask Jeeves and PayPal – thinks the site “has good intellectual property.”

In this pre-post MySpace world of ours, who’s right and who’s wrong?
