Coffee Break: Online PR, Twitter, and the New York Times

I’m starting an experiment here, so let me know what you think.

Each morning I read the New York Times and other news sources (the ones that have apps that download the articles to my phone for offline viewing) on my iPhone on the way to work (on the subway – not while driving!).  I often read articles very relevant to Internet marketing; these are the articles that get me psyched for the day, excited about Internet marketing and the work we do for our clients. So, I thoght to myself, why not share? These aren’t necessarily the latest in news about online marketing, but NYTimes and other news media do a good job of discussing the tools, people, and phenomena of the Internet and Internet business. It’s a welcome change from the blog posts and tweets that focus on this issue or that feature.

As always, this post like the rest of our blog, is geared to people who use Internet marketing for their business but aren’t necessarily IM geeks – like us. :)

Below are my links for today.  Grab a cup of coffee, and happy reading! Don’t forget to let me know what you think!

Bing – You're It!

BingWell, it’s no secret to those who know me that I am not a fan of most of Microsoft’s products (though some cool things are happening with the XBOX 360 if this is its future).  But this week Microsoft launched Bing, a new search engine aimed at finally procuring a serious portion of the search-engine market.

I’ve played around with it a bit, watching its video tutorials (probably the weakest part of the launch, actually), and searching, you know, for things.  I have to admit, it’s pretty cool.  I’ll write more after more testing, and figuring out how it’s going to shake up the online marketing world.  But in the meantime, here’s something that can’t be ignored: Bing has overtaken Yahoo! and holds more of the market than MSN and Windows Live did, combined.  Pretty impressive.

Have you tried it?  What do you think?

Online Sales Up Despite Down Economy – Then Came the Flu

103287The economy is still in the crapper – and now it seems the recent swine flu outbreak is gearing up to deal it another low blow – but there are signs of improvement, if only on the Internet.

According to a recent study conducted by Forrester Research and Shop.org and published by eMarketer, online sales in the United States increased, on average, 11 percent in the first quarter of this year. Of the 80 companies studied, nearly 60 percent reported growth in online sales, while almost 70 percent of consumer brand manufacturers and multichannel retailers saw an increase in Web sales. Web-only companies, however, weren’t so lucky; about 60 percent of businesses without brick-and-mortar stores reported sales declines.

An interesting set of statistics, for sure. And they beg a couple of questions.

Internet Ad Spending: It's going up while other advertising goes down

OK, this is one of those “Duh” and “We’ll see” articles.  Mediapost.com is reporting that ad spending is predicted to go down in all media except the Internet.  First of all, companies are never good at predicting what they will be spending in the future, especially more than a year out.

I’d like to see what the predictions were three years ago and what the reality turned out to be.

Still, it is nice to see companies are expecting to increase online ad spending.  We’ll be happy to manage some of that!

Does Your Company’s Graph, Poll or Chart Need a Makeover?

Make your visual aids more simple and easy-to-use.

Don’t you want to get rid of that bowl cut your friend has been sporting since 6th grade? Sometimes visual aids, like people, need a makeover. Among its many benefits, makeovers can give an unsightly graph a quick touch up, get rid of a poll’s unappealing colors or clear out a chart’s numerical clutter. The whole point of the makeover is to try and make what you have better than what it was before.

It is very important for businesses to make their visual aids very simple and easy-to-use so that audiences instantly understand the reason for them. If the visual aids are not easily understood companies risk having their audiences both miss the message and become alienated.

Get Your Message Across

The inspiration for this blog came as I was reading the daily news online. When I landed on the newsweek homepage, my eyes were drawn to a poll graph that asked whether I was or was not in support of the US bailout plan.
